The Triple-Threat To Happiness: Laugh, Smile, Sing!

Posted in: Feature Article
By Paula G Rosario

Were you ever in a bad mood and then someone did something unexpectedly, and you couldn't help but smile? How did you feel afterwards? Lighter? Happier? More patient? Was it easier to keep going, when before you couldn't muster the energy?

Did you know the song, "Smile Though Your Heart Is Breaking," was both written and sung by Charlie Chaplin? How interesting that the leading entertainer of his time, expressed it in this way. He brought many smiles to many people and knew that a smile has the potential to soothe what was wrong and to change the world.

Here's some research I read about smiling that may bring a smile to your face:

  1. Smiling boosts your immune system.
  2. Smiles use 5 - 53 facial muscles.
  3. Yes, smiling is contagious!
  4. It uses more energy to frown than to smile.
  5. Smiles are more attractive than makeup.
  6. Smiling when you are in a bad mood... lifts your mood.

Action: Keep track of how many times a day you smile. Then increase that by 5 each and every day. This will raise your awareness of your blessings and raise your vibration to invite more and more blessings to flow.

LAUGH

Like smiling, laughter is a great energy mover and mood enhancer! In fact, if you are a yoga fan, you may want to look into laughing yoga classes. Here are two of my favorite viral videos that may have you rolling off your chair in no time:

Scientists have had great things to say about laughter too:

  1. Laughing just 15 minutes a day can help you lose weight!
  2. The Mayo Clinic prescribes a good belly laugh for stress relief.
  3. Laughter IS the best medicine to help cardiovascular disease.
  4. And, like smiles, laughter is contagious.

Action: Take 15 minutes a day for laughter. Even if you are alone (especially if you are alone), just start laughing. You will see how easily the laughter will get bigger and bigger and your mood will feel lighter and lighter!

SING

Now, don't panic. You don't need to know how to carry a tune to be able to participate here! The healing part of singing is in the vibration and how it makes you feel. The observer has nothing to do with your joy! Sing in the shower, sing in your car, sing until your heart joins in. On occasion, I've been known to shamelessly sing in the supermarket - it got me a spot in the express lane!

Singing:

  • Energizes
  • Relieves stress
  • Creates
  • Inspires
  • Soothes

Action: Choose a mundane task that you do each day and hum, chant or sing your favorite tune (throw in some dancing too)!
