HOT TOPIC: The Obama Healthcare

I live in Canada, and work in our Canadian health care system; while our healthcare is not perfect; Canadians are not losing their homes or going bankrupt because they have to pay for basic medical care or catastrophic illnesses treatment. For the most part our drugs are affordable or government subsidized.

I have family in The States and currently I’m staying here in Washington DC for a six-month medical educational sabbatical. It’s scary what’s being proposed for the American’s

This is not a debate about Obama it's about Healthcare

What are your concerns for you and your family for this Obama Health Care plan?

MFW,

I'm very concerned, because I want to find ways that all can get health care, but also that we (as in U.S.) are responsible in paying for it. I work in healthcare, & see both side-the folks who waited too long to be seen by a doctor because they couldn't afford it, & the ones who have every test under the sun performed 'just in case' they might have some rare tropical fever! Somehow we need to get to a middle ground, so that the BASICS are covered. I'm astounded at how much is spent on cosmetic & elective surgeries. I'm also astounded at the folks who can afford beer & cigarettes, but not medicine for their kids. We also need each citizen to take some responsibility for his/her own health. So many times here we see folks ignore all their health issues for years, & then ask the doctor to 'fix' them with a pill. We need to educate the kids to learn to take better care of themselves.

I don't think either side (Dem or Rep) has it all figured out, & I don't think Canada has the perfect system either, but it is more equal than U.S.

I agree, there is too much waste within the health care system. The medical insurance agencies and pharmaceutical companies are greedy. All too often medical insurance is not a priority in people’s lives until there’s an illness or accident. OMG have you check the itemized list of meds and or medical supplies used or not used we’re charged for?

I agree-they charge for so much that is not used, or charge so much for what is used. A pair of socks can cost $20! And some procedure charges are ridiculus-it seems they overcharge for everything, and then 'deal down' the prices for what ever the insurance groups pay. There is a doctor's group now that does not do any insurance billing. They give you a receipt & let you deal w/ the insurance company. They were able to cut their fees in half!

I love the idea of minor health clinics in malls-makes it accessible, & cost effective for most folks, for what they need to see a clinician for. Save the ER for real trauma, not a bad cold.
